EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
