Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
