The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
